The Cater Museum is looking for volunteers and trustees. Can you help?
Trustee roles
Trustees use their expertise to drive the strategic development of the museum to ensure a better and sustainable future for the organisation as a museum and charity. The board meets 6 times a year with an average time commitment of about 2-3 days per month.
The Board of Trustees is looking for a Chair to oversee the Board of Trustees. Working with other members of the Board, the Chair ensures we meet our strategic aims.
The following are essential for the role:
- Diplomatic, decisive, and empathetic.
- Comfortable working with computers.
- Good organisational skills.
- Forward thinking.
- Meet the requirements of the Trustees Eligibility Criteria as set by the Charities Commission.
Experience in the charity, museum, heritage, or culture sector, or in a managing role would be beneficial.

Volunteer roles
We have a number of volunteer roles. Working with other museum personnel, some of these roles could be shared or done remotely.
- Front of house – our most essential volunteer, opening the museum and providing a warm welcome to visitors.
- Head gardener – lead the way in turning our garden into a pollinator-friendly kitchen garden.
- Gardener(s) – work with the head gardener to transform our garden.
- From home gardener – are you able to provide the museum with young plants, seedlings, divided plants, or even compost?
- Collections (management, preventative conservation, research) – these roles ensure our collections are safe, and accessible to the community.
- Maintenance and DIY – helping to maintain our beautiful Georgian building.
- Community engagement (schools and afterschool groups, social media) – creatively engaging with Billericay’s communities to ensure greater access
