about

We are a small museum in the heart of Billericay High Street dedicated to the history of the area and its communities. Pop in to learn something new about your town.

There is no entry fee but donations help us thrive, and we would encourage you to support us by joining The Friends of the Cater Museum.

a little bit about the museum

74 High Street, a former shop and home of a saddle and harness maker, was purchased by Alice Cater with the aim of establishing a town museum. It was named ‘Cater’ in honour of her husband the antiquarian, William Cater. The museum opened in 1960 and featured collections from the Caters, Harry Richman (our first curator), Anthony Nicholls, and A. Basil Brooks.
